Infosys Sets New Goal to Remove More Carbon than it Emits by 2030
Global digital services and consulting firm Infosys announced a new set of commitments under its updated sustainability strategy “Infosys ESG Vision 2030,” including a new goal to become carbon negative by the end of the decade —moving beyond net zero to sequester more greenhouse gases from the atmosphere than it emits.
Infosys launched its ESG Vision 2030 strategy in 2020, and also announced at the time that it had achieved carbon neutrality, reaching a target initially set by the company in 2011.
The company’s updated ambition includes a target to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90% from a 2020 baseline by 2030, and Scope 3 emissions by 40%. The company has also pledged to remain carbon neutral through 2030, and to engage clients on climate action through its solutions.
In addition to climate change, Infosys’ ESG Vision 2030 encompasses areas of focus including water and waste management, digital skilling and employability, nurturing workplace inclusivity, amplifying communities, employee wellness and workplace experience, along with corporate governance, data privacy and information management.
Additional targets included in the company’s updated strategy include extending digital skills to empower at least 18 million people and enabling employment opportunities for at least 500,000 people, ensuring zero waste to landfill, creating a gender-diverse workforce with 45% women, and helping to create sustainable communities through Tech for Good initiatives, job creation and CSR efforts.
The company reported that over 98% of its clients have engaged with its ESG offerings, as it seeks to embed sustainability into its technology and consulting services, including areas such as responsible AI and sustainable software engineering.
Infosys CEO Salil Parekh said:
“As we’ve made progress on our ESG aspirations, our vision for the future has grown bolder too. This is reflected in the updates that we have made to the Infosys ESG Vision 2030. What remains unchanged is our continued commitment to be a well-governed organization living its purpose to amplify human potential and create the next opportunity for people, businesses, and communities.”
