eBay Releases Plan to Reach Net Zero Across Value Chain by 2045
eBay announced the publication of its first Climate Transition Plan, outlining how the global online marketplace aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions across its operations and value chain by 2045, in addition to its efforts to advance sustainable commerce.
eBay was founded in 1995 and is now one of the world’s largest digital marketplaces, operating across 190 markets. The company announced its 2045 net zero goal last year, which has been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
In addition to the 2045 net zero target, key climate goals in the plan include a 90% reduction in emissions across the value chain by 2045, 90% Scope 1 and 2 emissions reduction by 2030, and 27.5% Scope 3 emissions from downstream transportation and distribution by 2030. The company also aims to maintain 100% renewable electricity, which it first achieved in 2024.
For the years between now and 2045, the Climate Transition Plan places particular emphasis on tackling downstream transportation and distribution, which accounts for nearly 84% of eBay’s total carbon footprint. As it does not own delivery fleets, eBay’s strategy relies on collaboration with logistics partners to drive change, including shifting shipments from air to ground transport, expanding the use of electric delivery vehicles and supporting the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel.
eBay has also embedded sustainability requirements into carrier contracts including encouraging investments into cleaner technologies such as zero-emission vehicles, route optimization, renewable energy and sustainable packaging. In some cases, the company is also pursuing direct co-investment and pilot programs with partners to accelerate innovation.
The company’s transition plan noted progress in this area. DHL, for example, announced they are aiming for 66% electric vehicles in last-mile delivery by 2030, transitioning to sustainable marine biofuels, and investing in SAF with a 30% usage goal by 2030.
According to eBay, the new plan also identifies climate risks and opportunities for the business amid rising consumer demand for resale and sustainable shopping Key focus areas in the plan include advancing sustainable commerce through eBay’s circular marketplace which extends product life and reduces waste, as well as initiatives to embed climate factors into the company’s governance, risk management, and financial planning.
Renee Morin, eBay’s Chief Sustainability Officer, said:
“We believe the future of commerce and the future of our planet are deeply connected. Building on our recommerce legacy, our Climate Transition Plan showcases how we will achieve net zero emissions by 2045 while supporting a low-carbon economy. It reflects eBay’s long-standing commitment to climate resiliency, creating enduring value for our customers and community.”
