Whirlpool Commits to Reach Net Zero Across Value Chain by 2050
Home appliance manufacturer Whirlpool announced a series of new climate-related goals, including a new commitment to reach net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the value chain by 2050.
The company added that its new near- and long-term net zero targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
The new near-term targets include goals to reduce operational Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 65% by 2030, as well as a Scope 3 target to reduce emissions from the use of sold products by 25% by 2030.
Whirlpool’s new climate targets were announced with the release of the company’s 2025 Corporate Responsibility Impact Report, which indicated that Scope 3 emissions account for the vast majority (approximately 99%) of the company’s GHG footprint, primarily from the use of the company’s products, which make up 88% of indirect value chain emissions.
Long-term, Whirlpool is now targeting a reduction of Scope 1 and 2 and key Scope 3 emissions – including those from use of sold products as well as from purchased goods and services by 90% by 2050. Purchased goods and services currently account for 7% Whirlpool’s of Scope 3 emissions.
Beat Stocker, senior director of global sustainability at Whirlpool Corporation, said:
“We remain firmly committed to continued progress in emissions reductions. Our updated, independently validated targets align with the latest science and build on our progress to enable practical, business-balanced emissions reductions across our operations, products and supply chain.”
The report also highlighted progress the company has made in its climate initiatives, indicating that Whirlpool has reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 57% since 2021, and by 6% in 2025, and Scope 3 Use of Sold Products emissions by 15% since 2021, and by 0.5% in 2025. The company said that its progress towards its targets will be supported by investments in product innovation and efficiency, operational efficiency including renewable energy projects and supplier engagement.
Marc Bitzer, chairman and CEO of Whirlpool Corporation, said:
“In 2025, we made meaningful progress lowering emissions across our operations and delivering innovative, efficient products that help families save money and use less energy and water every day. Our work reflects our belief that product performance, affordability and sustainability are fundamentally connected, and that belief drives us to continuously improve and create better products for our customers.”
