Capgemini Climate Targets Approved by Science-Based Targets Initiative, Fast Tracks Net Zero Efforts
Global consulting, digital transformation, technology, and engineering services company Capgemini announced today that its new carbon reduction targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). According to the company, the approval is in line with SBTi’s most stringent standard category of limiting warming to 1.5°C.
SBTi was formed as a collaboration between CDP, World Resources Institute (WRI), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), with the goal to establish science-based environmental target setting as a standard corporate practice. Achieving approval of targets by SBTi is a significant milestone for companies’ sustainability efforts.
To date, nearly 1,000 companies globally have pledged to align their decarbonization plans with the Paris Agreement by adopting science-based greenhouse gas reduction targets, and slightly over 450 companies have had their targets approved by SBTi.
Capgemini stated that it set its new targets after achieving its previous headline 2°C science-based target to reduce 30% emissions per employee by 2030, a decade ahead of schedule. The company is now fast-tracking efforts to become a net zero business within the next decade, firming up strategies for electric fleet transition, switching to 100% renewable energy by 2025, and leveraging the possibilities of remote delivery through its digital workplace plan. Additional initiatives include building low carbon travel alternatives into policy, creating a new commuting action plan, and focusing on supply chain emissions reduction.
SBTi lists Capgemini’s climate targets as follows:
“Capgemini SE commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 80% by 2030 from a 2015 base year. Capgemini SE commits to increase annual sourcing of renewable electricity from 25% in 2015 to 100% by 2025. Capgemini SE commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services by 50% by 2030 from a 2015 base year. Capgemini SE commits to reduce scope 3 GHG emissions from business travel and employee commuting 50% per employee by 2030 from a 2015 base year.”
Shobha Meera, Capgemini’s Group CSR Officer and member of the Group Executive Committee, said:
“This milestone is a validation of our commitment and plan to be a net zero business by 2030. We view our journey to a sustainable future as good for the planet, good for our people, and fundamental to our role as a leader in technology and business transformation.”
