Anthropic Commits 5% of Shares to a New Public Benefit Fund
AI developer Anthropic announced the launch of “Anthropic Public Benefit Fund,” a new entity described by the company as “dedicated entirely to the public benefit,” providing the company with more flexibility to fund initiatives such as non-profits and AI-affected populations.
The company, the owner and developer of Claude, said that it will immediately commit 5% of its shares to the new fund, subject to stockholder approval, with an additional 2% added, at the board’s discretion, for every 50% increase in the company’s value.
Anthropic lists its mission as ensuring that the world safely makes the transition through transformative AI. The company is structured as a public benefit corporation, with most of the work towards its mission taking place inside the company, such as research relevant to AI safety and interpretability, applied biomedical research and discounts on Claude for nonprofits and scientific institutions.
While Anthropic noted that these types of activities have both a public benefit component and for-profit value, and are housed inside the company. The new fund, however, will enable it to pursue its mission in new ways, the company said, such as enabling large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations.
As an example, Anthropic said that the fund could have the ability to pursue solutions studied by the company to address the instability may cause for large numbers of workers.
Anthropic added that none of the equity held by the new fund will be used for lobbying or political giving, in the U.S. or abroad.
The company also noted that it also previously established an equity donation match program that allows employees to pledge equity which Anthropic matches, which has participation from around half of its employees. Combined with the new announced fund, Anthropic said that approximately 20% of its shares will now be dedicated to the public good.
The company said:
“Because of the way the Fund is structured, the more Anthropic grows, the larger the share of the company that can be dedicated expressly to the public good. It is common practice for tech companies to offer escalating compensation awards to their executives. We are instead directing that equity to the public benefit.”
