Global technology-focused professional services firm Cognizant announced today the launch of Cognizant Ocean, a new business group aimed at helping Blue Economy-focused clients apply technologies to improve business outcomes, reduce carbon emissions, and support ocean sustainability.
According to Cognizant, the new business launch comes as Blue Economy sectors, or those that operate in and around oceans, including shipping, marine transportation, offshore oil and gas, marine renewables, aquaculture, and marine conservation, are facing sustainability-related challenges, stemming from issues including environmental impact and climate change.
Rob Walker, President of Global Growth Markets at Cognizant, said:
“Business that rely on a healthy ocean for their livelihood are facing unprecedented challenges because of climate change and over-exploitation on their industry. We created Cognizant Ocean to combine our deep expertise in digital transformation with our understanding of the unique dynamics of ocean industries to deliver solutions that simultaneously improve business outcomes and reduce carbon output.”
The new business group will target four key industries, including Blue Carbon, with a focus on ocean decarbonization, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, climate change impact mitigation and promoting sustainable practices; Blue Energy, focused on ocean-based energy such as offshore wind, tidal energy and wave energy; Blue Transport, aimed at developing efficient and sustainable transportation solutions for maritime and coastal activities and ocean liners, and; Blue Food, with a focus on aquaculture and marine food production sustainability.
Alongside the launch, Cognizant announced a new collaboration with ocean-focused machine learning platform startup Tidal, aimed at making the company’s ocean information platform widely available to the aquaculture market. Tidal’s solution utilizes innovations in underwater perception, machine learning, AI, and automation to gather and analyze data, enabling aquaculture users to make more intelligent decisions, build operational resilience, and operate more efficiently.
Tidal Founder and CEO, Neil Davé, said:
“To preserve ocean health, we need to take an innovation-driven and collaborative approach with aquaculture companies and other businesses that make their living on and in the ocean. Through our collaboration with Cognizant, we hope to build on our initial success in the Norwegian aquaculture industry, and eventually expand to other sectors of the Blue Economy to make a meaningful impact in ocean health and global decarbonization.”
Stig Martin Fiskå, Global Head of Cognizant Ocean, added:
“With digital technology ocean industries can not only become more resilient and future-proof in the face of a more unpredictable and rapidly changing environment, but they can help make oceans healthier and address humanity’s biggest problems – from food production to renewable energy to climate change. We welcome this important collaboration with Tidal to work together with clients to support their holistic, systems-level change.”
