Consumer electronics giant LG Electronics announced today a new climate goal targeting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated in the use phase of its products, a primary source of GHG emissions, with a commitment to set a science-based target to reduce emissions from major products by 2030.
With the new goal, LG stated that it becomes the first Korean company to participate in the “Business Ambition for 1.5°C” global net zero campaign. The campaign, led by the Science Based Targets Initiative with support of UN agencies, businesses, sustainability-focused organizations and industry leaders, calling on companies to commit to set ambitious science-based emissions reduction targets in line with a 1.5°C future.
Today’s announcement builds on LG’s current climate goals, which include reducing direct carbon emissions and indirect emissions generated during the production process by 50%. Last month, the company also pledged to transition to 100% renewable energy by 2050, and to have all manufacturing facilities outside of Korea converted to 50% renewable electricity within 4 years.
With the new commitment, LG is going after a more challenging and significant source of emissions, coming from the use phase of its refrigerators, washing machines and residential air conditioners. According to the company, the use phase of major products accounts for more than 80% of its GHG emissions.
