Luxury Brand Burberry Targets Supply Chain Emissions in Bid to Become Climate Positive by 2040
Luxury brand Burberry announced a new environmental sustainability initiative today, committing to go exceed its current 2040 net zero target, to become climate positive by that time. Burberry will invest in key climate-focused initiatives, aiming to have a positive climate impact beyond the footprint of the company’s value chain.
Marco Gobbetti, Chief Executive Officer at Burberry, said:
“Burberry was built upon a desire to explore nature and the great outdoors and they have remained our inspiration for more than 150 years. Drawing on this heritage of exploration and driven by our creative spirit, today, we are setting a bold new ambition: to become climate positive by 2040.”
Burberry outlined several actions it will take towards its new goal. These include a significant acceleration in its targets for emissions reductions in the company’s supply chain to 46% by 2030, compared to the prior 30% goal.
The company also committed to help develop projects which support others in their own carbon journeys. Burberry will invest in programmes that protect and restore natural ecosystems that remove carbon from the atmosphere, fund climate resilience projects that empower vulnerable, frontline communities to adapt to changing realities and protect livelihoods, and advocate for transform the fashion industry, partnering with peers, policymakers, and NGOs.
Along with the new initiatives, Burberry announced its support for the Fashion Avengers, a coalition of global fashion organisations that have come together to inspire action towards achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
