An important point to remember is that the concept of ESG from an investors perspective is new, whereas environmental management and community engagement themselves are not new. Companies have been collecting data for many years usually to meet regulatory compliance purposes, which is not only different in every jurisdiction, but has different qa/qc protocols. This has led to the situation where companies with assets in more than one country/state/province has data that is likely not comparable. When it comes to consolidating this data into one report it’s excruciating for the person responsible for trying to present it in a way that makes sense (and have likely been asking for better data management systems for years!)
