Google Cloud and energy company Total announced the launch of Solar Mapper, a new tool aimed at accelerating the deployment of rooftop solar panels for individuals.

The new platform is designed to provide an accurate and rapid estimate of the solar energy potential of their homes, using artificial intelligence technology. According to Total, Solar Mapper’s AI algorithms will improve the quality of the data extracted from satellite images, the sharpness of the estimation of the location’s solar potential, the relevance of the technology to be installed, as well as providing global geographic coverage.

The companies stated that the tool will first be deployed in Europe, and then worldwide. According to Total, Solar Mapper already provides more than 90% geographical coverage in France, allowing many more people to assess the solar potential of their homes, with greater accuracy than before. The company also stated that it intends to develop a B2B application of Solar Mapper, dedicated to industrial and commercial buildings and installations.
