GHG Protocol Appoints Tim Mohin as First CEO
Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reporting framework provider GHG Protocol announced today the appointment of sustainability strategy and reporting veteran Tim Mohin to the newly created role of Chief Executive Officer.
GHG Protocol was established in 1997 by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) to develop comprehensive global standardized frameworks to measure and manage GHG emissions from private and public sector operations, value chains and mitigation actions. GHG Protocol’s standards have been integrated and referenced in major global sustainability reporting frameworks including the IFRS Foundation’s ISSB standards and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) underlying the CSRD regulation.
The creation of the new CEO role marks a significant step in the evolution of GHG Protocol, with the move coming as the organization is in the midst of updating some of its key emissions reporting standards, and following the recent launch of a strategic partnership with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) aimed at unifying the global standards used for greenhouse gas emissions measurement and reporting, with the two organizations mandated by the COP30 Presidency to lead the global harmonization of GHG accounting.
GHG Protocol said that the new CEO’s responsibilities will include working closely with governments, regulators, standard setters, businesses and civil society to strengthen carbon accounting practices, drive alignment across frameworks and build trust in emissions disclosures worldwide, with the role also focusing on ensuring the organization can scale its impact, support its ambitious standards publication timeline, and engage effectively across a complex and rapidly evolving global landscape.
Geraldine Matchett, Chair of the GHG Protocol Steering Committee, said:
“The scale of our work and the pace of change across the reporting landscape bring with them a growing need for a dedicated CEO role. This reflects a natural step in GHG Protocol’s institutional maturity and will enable the organisation to meet rising expectations while sustaining the integrity and independence of its standards. Tim fits the bill perfectly and is the right leader for this moment.”
Mohin served as Chief Executive of leading sustainability reporting standards organization Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) from 2017 to 2020, and he joins GHG Protocol from Boston Consulting Group, where he served as Director of Climate and Sustainability. He has also served as Chief Sustainability Officer at carbon accounting software company Persefoni, and held senior sustainability leadership roles at major technology companies including Intel, Apple and AMD, in addition to working in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Senate.
Mohin said:
“I’ve spent my career at the intersection of corporate sustainability and public policy – across government, global business and standards setting. The Greenhouse Gas Protocol underpins corporate climate commitments, regulatory disclosure frameworks, net‑zero targets and carbon markets worldwide. This is the most important climate infrastructure job in the world, and this is the moment it matters most.”
