Automotive giant General Motors (GM) announced the launch of GM Energy, a new business division aimed at delivering energy management solutions and products for homes, businesses and electric vehicle users.
The new business is built around GM’s Ultium battery platform, which has formed the backbone of its “all-electric” vehicle strategy.
In a social media post announcing the launch of GM Energy, General Motors CEO Mary Barra said that the company is “on a mission to create an all-electric future for everyone, everywhere.” Barra added:
“Now with GM Energy, that includes expanding our flexible Ultium system to offer energy management solutions for homes, businesses and communities.”
The new business will consist of GM’s electric vehicle charging unit, Ultium Charge 360, alongside newly launched offerings Ultium Home and Ultium Commercial, to create a “cohesive energy management for home, commercial and EV customers.”
Solutions offered by GM Energy will include a broad range of energy management, storage and charging products and services, including bi-directional charging, vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) applications, to stationary storage, solar products, software applications, cloud management tools, microgrid solutions, and hydrogen fuel cells.
The business will also enable users to sell energy from EV and stationary storage batteries back to the grid during peak, high energy consumption periods.
GM revealed that several large U.S. companies have already agreed to work with GM Energy, both to provide energy solutions to customers, and to receive products and service offerings. The company announced an agreement with solar tech and energy service provider SunPower to develop and offer customers a home energy system which will consist of integrated EV and battery solutions, solar panels and home energy storage, as well as a pilot project with PG&E to enable residential customers to use EVs as a backup power source during short-term power outages.
Travis Hester, Vice President of GM EV Growth Operations, said:
“GM Energy’s mission is to offer customers access to a full suite of energy products and services, including solutions beyond the vehicle, accelerating the seamless transition to an all-electric future.”
