Honeywell, Wood Unveil Technologies Targeting Carbon Neutral Aviation Fuel
Industrial products, solutions and technologies company Honeywell and energy-focused consulting and engineering company Wood announced today the introduction of a comprehensive package of technologies aimed at supporting efforts to produce carbon neutral sustainable aviation fuel.
Air transport has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years as a significant contributor to GHG emissions. According to European Commission estimates, aviation accounts for 2% of global GHG emissions.
According to the companies, the new package combines Honeywell’s UOP Ecofining process technology, and Wood’s hydrogen plant technology, along with carbon capture and storage, potentially reducing lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by 100%.
Ben Owens, Vice President and General Manager of Honeywell Sustainable Technology Solutions, said:
“The combination of these technologies from Honeywell and Wood greatly reduces fossil carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional fuels by using byproducts to provide hydrogen for the Ecofining process. As a result, a renewable fuels refinery can be essentially self-sustaining in hydrogen production while reducing the carbon intensity of the renewable fuels to very low levels.”
Honeywell’s UOP Ecofining process technology converts waste oils, fats, and greases into Honeywell Green Jet Fuel, reducing lifecycle GHG emissions by up to 80%, relative to conventional jet fuel. According to the companies, Wood’s technology will be integrated to use the byproducts of the UOP Ecofining process technology to produce renewable hydrogen, leading to another 10% emissions reduction. The solution then captures the CO2 generated from the production of the hydrogen for permanent underground sequestration, eliminating the remaining emissions.
